Extend RunTime is a limited version of the Extend program. For more information about the features and capabilities of the full Extend program, please refer to "ABOUT EXTEND", below. The Extend RunTime version runs on the Macintosh and PC compatible family of computers:
System Requirements:
Macintosh
System 6.0.7 or greater; 4MB RAM (8MB recommended).
Windows PC (386+)
Windows 3.1, NT, or 95; 4MB RAM (8MB recommended).
For technical support about the RunTime models, please contact the model developer (there is a space for the name of the model developer on the Extend RunTime start-up screen). For information or technical support for Extend, please see "ABOUT EXTEND...", below.
An Extend RunTime user can do the following:
• Change parameters in a model and save those changes.
• Run simulations and obtain graphical and tabular outputs.
• Import/export files and interface through the serial ports, provided that the Run-Time model has these features.
• See animation in the model if "Show Animation" is selected in the "Run" menu and the model has animation in it.
Extend RunTime models have the following limitations:
• You cannot build your own models. Blocks (the components of models) cannot be added to or removed from the models nor can connections between blocks be altered.
• You cannot build your own blocks or access the structure and dialog windows of an existing block. Therefore, you cannot modify icons, change a block's programmed behavior, add or delete dialog items, etc.
• RUNNING SIMULATIONS USING THE RUN-TIME VERSION:
• Open Extend RunTime. Then open the model file from the "File" menu.
Double-click the blocks (the icons in the model window) to open their dialog boxes and change parameters, then run the simulation using the "Run" menu. Simulations can be stopped with Command-Period (Macintosh) or CTRL-Period (Windows).
To change axis values in a plotter block: click on the axis limit values or use the autoscale tools (the 3 tools in the middle of the plot pane). Click on the axis tool in the plot pane to change plot trace titles, color, thickness, and format.
• ABOUT EXTEND™:
Put simulation power on your desktop
Extend graphically simulates and validates your ideas quickly and easily...no matter what type or how complex of a theory, process, or system you have imagined! Extend combines the most powerful features of advanced simulation systems into one package. Extend has a flexible iconic user interface, expandable libraries of reusable blocks, hierarchy, animation, a built-in authoring environment, sensitivity analysis, Excel interfacing, and more.
The ultimate brainstorming tool
An Extend model (simulation) consists of a series of interconnected blocks which can be changed in seconds. Extensive libraries of pre-defined blocks make model building fast and easy. You can add blocks to your model, connect them with the mouse, then run the simulation to achieve graphical and tabular results. Extend makes it easy to try out your new ideas, and get answers quickly.
"What if..."
Extend users readily model continuous, discrete event, and mixed-mode systems. Versatility is built in, so you can create your own blocks, or customize any of the standard blocks. Extend's flexibility solves real world problems and is used for "what if..." analyses in every field, from engineering to business, electronics to science, etc.
Libraries
The basic Extend package includes the Generic (general purpose & business), Discrete Event (queues, networks and material flow), Engineering (Electronics, Filter, Digital), and Plotter libraries (for displaying results in real time).
• EXTEND+MANUFACTURING™:
To model discrete operations research, industrial engineering, and manufacturing systems, use Extend+Manufacturing. This bundled package combines Extend with two specialized libraries of blocks (Manufacturing and Statistics), an additional manual, and numerous examples.
Extend+Manufacturing allows you to model manufacturing systems, paper flow, material handling, service industries, networks, manufacturing systems, information processing, distribution systems, transportation, etc. It is an excellent tool to use to analyze options, predict bottlenecks, document operating procedures, and justify costs.
• The Extend+Manufacturing manual provides an extensive number of examples, concepts, and alternative approaches. It reviews resources and operations, closed and open systems, attributes, priorities and values, merging and routing streams of items or entities, setting processing time, joining items for processing, scheduling, routing decisions, choosing parallel operations, bringing a system on-line, shutting down operations, accumulating data, and more. To complement the examples in the manual, the +Manufacturing disk comes with over 1MB of example models to parallel the discussion in the manual.
• This package also contains a free Statistics library! Statistics blocks accumulate and report statistical information for particular types of blocks in discrete event models: activities, queues, or resources. In addition to the block label, block name, and the time the information was observed, each of the blocks report statistics that are specific to their type of block, such as utilization or average wait time.
About Extend+BPR (Business Process Reengineering)
Apply systems analysis techniques to TQM and process improvement efforts with Extend+BPR. This bundled package combines Extend with two specialized libraries of blocks (BPR and Statistics), an additional manual, and numerous examples.
Extend+BPR allows you to model organizational change, analyze new processes for technology insertion, and provide metrics for strategic planning. It is an excellent tool to perform cross-functional analysis of business processes, measure performance, manage just-in-time scheduling, improve marketing positioning, and contain costs.
• The BPR library contains blocks that resemble familiar flow charting symbols and represent personnel, measurement, operations, decisions, repositories, transactions, etc.
• The Extend+BPR manual provides an extensive number of examples, concepts, and alternative approaches. It reviews each block's function and applies it to real world usage. The +BPR disk comes with numerous example models which parallel the discussion in the manual.
